Meta is soon retiring one of its popular apps. In a major update to users, Meta has announced that the Messenger desktop app, available for Windows and macOS, will be completely discontinued starting December 15, 2025. After this date, the ability to log in to the app will be lost, and users will be required to chat exclusively through the Facebook website.
The company has stated that it will soon begin informing users of this change through in-app notifications. According to Meta's help page, "As soon as the app deprecation process begins, users will receive an in-app alert. They will then be given 60 days to process the app before it is discontinued."
Users will receive a notification, and deletion advice will be provided.
Meta has advised users to delete the Messenger app immediately, as it will cease to function completely after 60 days. The company states that Mac and Windows users will still be able to send messages through the Facebook website or desktop app.
Additionally, Meta recommends users turn on the "Secure Storage" feature and set a PIN to protect their chat history. Once you switch to the web version, chats will automatically sync across all devices.
