On the occasion of Mother’s Day, it’s important to highlight one of the Modi government’s flagship schemes aimed at women’s welfare — the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). Under this scheme, pregnant women receive direct financial assistance to ensure better nutrition and maternal care.
What is PM Matru Vandana Yojana?The PMMVY is a central government scheme launched in 2017 to promote safe motherhood and improve health outcomes for both mothers and newborns. Key highlights include:

₹5,000 assistance is provided to pregnant women on the birth of their first child.

₹6,000 is provided on the birth of a girl child during the second pregnancy under PMMVY 2.0.
More than 4.26 crore women have registered under this scheme since its launch.
How Many Women Have Benefited?As per government data:

Over ₹18,000 crore has been transferred directly into the bank accounts of 3.90 crore women across India.

If there’s a pregnant woman in your family, she can register immediately and avail the benefits.
To be eligible for the scheme, the woman must fulfill the following criteria:
Must be at least 19 years old.
The scheme is applicable only for the first live birth.
In case of the second pregnancy, the benefit is available only if a girl child is born (including in twin births if one is a girl).
Annual family income must be less than ₹8 lakh.
The woman should possess any of the following documents:
