Perplexity has made its AI-powered browser, Comet, free for all Mac and Windows users. Previously, it was only available to Perplexity Max subscribers, but now anyone can use it without payment. Unlike other browsers like Chrome or Firefox, Comet is designed for those who use the internet heavily, whether for work, research, or other tasks.
Comet's most notable feature is Comet Assistant, an AI tool similar to Microsoft Edge's Copilot. It can answer questions about a webpage, summarize content, and even navigate sites.
The browser tracks your reads and actions and suggests relevant content based on your interests. Inactive tabs are automatically closed, and reminders help you pick up where you left off.
Each new tab has its own Comet Assistant, allowing you to ask different questions simultaneously. Other built-in tools include Discover, which showcases news, as well as tools for shopping, travel, finance, sports, and other areas.
Free vs. Paid Features
Many of Comet's features are now free, but some are still exclusive to Max subscribers. For example, Email Assistant drafts email replies in your preferred tone, and Background Assistant helps while you perform other tasks.
Free users won't be able to use these exclusive tools, but can take advantage of most AI tools for research, browsing, and content suggestions.
It may not be as immediately popular as simpler browsers like Chrome or Opera, but for those who surf the web daily, Comet could prove to be quite useful.
