Mumbai: The ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is nearing completion, with one vehicular underpass (VUP) and the remaining three arms expected to open to traffic this month. An Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), located behind Tata Garden in Breach Candy, is also set to be ready within a month, serving as the central monitoring hub for the entire coastal road.
The MCRP features multi-level interchanges at Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face, with four arms at Peddar Road, eight at Haji Ali, and six at Worli. A senior civic official said "The final arm at Haji Ali, linking Worli to Lotus Jetty, will open in two days, while two arms connecting Prabhadevi and Dadar will follow within 15 days. The new VUP will ease southbound traffic from Worli and Prabhadevi to Nariman Point and provide a direct link from the Sewri-Worli Connector, improving connectivity between the western suburbs and South Mumbai."
The ICCC will manage the entire coastal road through real-time data from CCTV cameras, traffic sensors, and weather stations. It will also monitor air quality and tunnel ventilation, and maintain operations during power outages through battery backup and generators. As part of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), it will use information and communication technology to streamline traffic flow.
"Currently in its final phase, the ICCC building will house a video wall for live surveillance, an emergency room, server room, and essential facilities. It includes two basement levels—one for fire and water tanks, and another for transformers, control panels, battery backup, diesel generators, and BEST equipment. A sub-station and SCADA system will also be installed for real-time system control and monitoring," he added.
The 10.58-km Coastal Road project, costing Rs. 13,983 crores, stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. In addition, a 7.5-km Marine Drive-style promenade with jogging tracks, seating areas, and green zones will open soon for public, running from Priyadarshini Park to Worli.
