Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has appointed her nephew Akash Anand as Chief National Coordinator, the party's newly created second-highest position.
This marks Anand's third significant appointment since December 2023, following two previous removals from party posts.
The announcement came during BSP's national meeting in Delhi, attended by state presidents and coordinators. Anand will now oversee three regional coordinators handling North, Northeast and South India operations.
The 35-year-old MBA graduate first entered politics in 2017. His political journey has seen multiple ups and downs, including a 40-day expulsion from the party in March 2025 before being reinstated in April.
The appointment coincides with BSP's decision to contest all 240 seats independently in the upcoming Bihar elections. The party also announced revival of its Bahujan Volunteer Force to address Dalit issues and praised the central government's Opration Sindoor in Kashmir.
BSP currently holds just one seat in UP's 403-member assembly, with its vote share declining from 19.43% in 2019 to 9.35% in the 2024 general elections.
