Liverpool to accept staggering loss on Darwin Nunez as new asking price emerges

Liverpool could lose around £15m on Darwin Nunez this summer after naming their asking price for the striker. The Uruguayan forward has struggled to match expectations at Anfield since his arrival from Benfica.

Nunez, 26, enjoyed a bright start to life at Anfield but scored just five Premier League goals last term after falling out of favour under Arne Slot. And it now appears that he could be jettisoned by the club.

Serie A side Napoli have emerged as suitors for his services over the summer, with the Italian champions keen to swoop for the forward. Amid that interest, it appears that Liverpool would now be willing to lose money on Nunez in an effort to get him out of the door.

As per Corriere dello Sport, the Reds would be willing to sell Nunez for around £70m - a huge decrease on the £85m fee that they paid to sign him from Benfica three years ago. Napoli are not willing to stump up that amount but remain interested.

It is further reported that president Aurelio De Laurentiis is personally conducting negotiations, while Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca is seen as a potential alternative. Meanwhile, Nunez has three years left to run on his deal at Anfield.

Speaking earlier this year, Liverpool boss Slot was forced to deny that Nunez’s limited game time last term was due to a clause in his deal that would have seen Liverpool pay a £5m add-on to Benfica.

He said: “Do you always believe what journalists say? Not always? Me neither. Sometimes you should, but sometimes it’s better not to believe everything that is written about players. This is completely new to me and I’ve said many times that I’m working at a club here where it’s really nice to work.

“So mainly sporting directors are judged by the players they bring in, for me it’s very important to have a great working environment and I have that with Richard (Hughes).

"The last, last, last, last, last thing he would do, as I expect working with him for 10 months, is tell me: ‘If you play him it would cost us this much’.

“That, he would never, never, never do. I don’t even know if it’s true, yes or no, because we never talk about that. He never interferes with a lineup. It might be true, but if a journalist says it we have to..... (take it with a pinch of salt).”
