Stench leads to grim discovery of 100 dead cats in house with some in freezer

Around 100 dead have been found at a house by fire crews who were investigating reports of a horrific stench.

The were discovered scattered around the house and even in a freezer at the property in Long Island, . Emergency services arrived at the scene at around 3pm local time on Saturday where they made the grim discovery. Bohemia Fire Department First Assistant Chief Brian Olsen told how they had been called due to the smell at the house.

“They notified us about cats and dead cats in the dwelling. They are at this time condemning the house," he reportedly said. It was not immediately clear exactly how many cats were found at the property and there has not been any official comment on whether anybody is living at the residence but locals said how they were used to seeing dozens of animals at the house.

But neighbours told that a man lived at the property on his own and that they had seen cats roaming inside and out for many years. They added that the felines were known to go into residents' backyards and sometimes left their properties smelling like ammonia. The outlet also said that the alleged owner was later seen at the house but refused to comment.

“I’m 29 years old. I’ve lived here my whole life and we’ve just seen cats coming in and out of the sump over here and at their garage and front door,” said Brandon Gennarelli, a neighbour who lives down the road. “We’ve had a lot of stray cats come in our back and front yards a lot. We don’t really know where they’ve been coming from but the fact that they’re coming in such bulk we kind of assumed that it’s coming from somewhere over here."

Images of the house also showed many cats at the windows. It is understood that it was an animal welfare organisation which contacted the fire service due to the smell of ammonia and led to them finding the animals inside. “They notified us about cats and dead cats in the dwelling," said Mr Olsen of the Bohemia Fire Department.

The house has had to be condemned due to the high levels of ammonia. A full investigation is now being undertaken by local authorities with a fire marshal having placed a "keep out" sign on the front door.
