The new law regarding the online gaming industry in India has now started hurting companies deeply. Mobile Premier League (MPL), which is popular among millions of youth across the country, has given a big shock to its employees. The company has announced that it is going to lay off 60% of its local workforce. That is, 6 out of every 10 employees will now have to lose their jobs. This step has been taken at a time when the Government of India has recently banned online paid games. The question is arising whether the entire gaming industry will collapse after this ban?
MPL CEO Sai Srinivas wrote in an email sent to employees on Sunday that with a heavy heart we have decided that the Indian team will have to be reduced to a great extent. He did not give the exact number of layoffs, but according to sources, about 60% of the employees will be removed. The company has said that the affected employees will be given every possible help in this transition period.
MPL's business
It is worth noting that MPL's business in India was very big. About 50% of the company's total earnings came from India, but after the new rules, now no revenue will be received from here. That is, the market that built the company, has now posed a crisis to its existence. The government has cited the increasing financial risk and addiction among the youth as the reason for the ban on online paid games. Due to this law, many games like fantasy cricket, rummy and poker have suddenly stopped. According to industry estimates, this industry could have been worth $3.6 billion by 2029, but now its future is in limbo.
