As a pet owner, the last thing we want is for our beloved animal friend to get sick or be in pain. Because of this, we often do whatever it takes to keep them happy and healthy.
However, sometimes the worst still happens. This was the case for one dog owner, who was told that his chocolate-coloured Labrador, named Asia, had cancer.
Asia had a type of cancer called Histiocytic Sarcoma (HS), which is a highly aggressive and rare cancer in dogs that arises from histiocytes, which are cells of the immune system. The cancer can be localised to a single area, such as the skin, bone, or spleen, or disseminated throughout the body.
Treatment for HS involves surgery for localized disease and chemotherapy for disseminated or advanced cases, though the prognosis is often poor.
Luckily, Asia had a happy ending as she was able to beat the cancer, but not without any sacrifices as she had to have one of her back legs amputated.
When she woke up the next morning from surgery, she was officially cancer free. However, despite her owner thinking she knew the cancer was gone, seeing as dogs can smell it, she was still confused when she woke up.
Her owner took to Instagram to share a video he'd taken the moment Asia was waking up at home from the surgery, as she was heard crying.
"This was the first morning Asia woke up with one less leg... She was so confused and I can only imagine how hard it must have been for her to process," her owner wrote in the caption of the video.
Asia continued to look around the room, clearly confused as to what had happened, while her owner was laying beside her to try to comfort her.
He went on to write: "Thankfully, this moment is now just a memory. My brave chocolate lab had her leg amputated after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer called histiocytic sarcoma."
Thankfully, the moment of crying and confusion was temporary, as he went on to say: "Today, she's not just surviving - she's thriving. Asia is living her best life as a proud 3-legged superstar, and nothing is slowing her down."
Asia's family weren't the only people that were left heartbroken from her realisation, as the comment section was soon filled with viewers who wanted nothing but the best for Asia.
"Give that baby lots of kisses," one person wrote along with a line of red hearts, while another viewer said: "Aww honey, I'm sorry. But you will figure it out, I promise. You're so brave."
Someone else went on to write: "You woke up with her, Is the best you could do to comfort her."
"it's difficult even for humans, i can't even imagine what it would be like for a dog, not understanding why that happened to them. you are amazing for helping her through this," another person said.
