Andy Robertson has joined the chorus of voices sending their best to John Heitinga, who is stepping down from his position as Arne Slot's assistant manager at Liverpool to take the reins at Ajax as head coach. Heitinga, 41, was brought into Liverpool last summer to be part of Slot's revamped coaching staff. The move proved a masterstroke, with Liverpool clinching the Premier League title in their first season under the new regime.
The former Everton defender is now set to embark on his own managerial adventure with Ajax after a brief but memorable stint at Anfield. The announcement came on Saturday morning, and Robertson was quick to acknowledge Heitinga's contribution, sharing a photo of them celebrating Liverpool's recent title triumph with the caption: "Success this season wouldn't of been possible with you! Good luck legend."
Liverpool also released an official statement on Heitinga's departure: "Liverpool FC can confirm John Heitinga is to depart the club to take up the role of Ajax head coach.
"The 41-year-old leaves the Reds after one season in the backroom team, operating as assistant coach to Arne Slot. He now assumes a position in charge of former club Ajax in his native Netherlands.
"John leaves with our gratitude and appreciation for his role in our 2024-25 Premier League title win."
Heitinga is set to take the reins in Amsterdam, replacing Francesco Farioli who stepped down following the club's dramatic failure to clinch the Dutch title in the closing weeks of the 2024-25 season.
The ex-centre-back, who made over 200 appearances for Ajax during his playing days and has previously managed the club's reserve team and served as interim head coach, will now lead the team.
Liverpool are now tasked with finding a replacement for Heitinga ahead of the upcoming season with former forward Dirk Kuyt one of those linked with replacing Heitinga.
