Making your roses look perfect can be tricky but with this simple maintenance tip, you won't need to worry about them dying. This fragrant flower can instantly brighten any garden and make the perfect feature piece so it's crucial to get it right.
If you have ever grown roses, you know that it's not always the easiest. Gardening expert Harry Bodell has shared one important tip that is often overlooked by gardeners. This could be the key to success for your blooms.
He says it's important to choose the right location when planting your flowers.
Harry, from Priceyourjob.co.uk says: "The first thing to consider when planting your roses is selecting the right location for optimum growth.
"To get them off to a good start, choose an area that has well-draining soil and receives plenty of sunlight.
"Roses crave sunlight, so they should be planted in a spot that gets at least six hours of sunlight per day - shadier sites may hinder the number of blooms.
"Avoid ground that can easily become flooded and instead find a site with good drainage in order to keep the roots dry and avoid root rot."
But this is not the only tip he has, he also says it's crucial to mulch the ground.
To keep your roses blooming all summer long, you are going to want to ensure that the soil is protected to keep roots in the best shape possible.
Mulching is a great way to do this as it helps to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, he adds.
Layer the soil around your roses with organic mulch such as bark chips or compost. For further protection, a great hack is to place a few layers of newspaper underneath.
In doing this, you are not only helping your roses bloom but also helping the environment by recycling paper. Maintaining vibrant, continuous rose blooms all summer takes a mix of smart planting, regular care, and observation.
By picking the right spot and keeping the soil rich, you can ensure your flowers will be in perfect condition all summer.
